Born to Learn: Class Reunion (by Born to Learn)
I think this relates to performing your art, whatever it maybe, writing, speaking or cooking. Often we focus on the skills, because we want to succeed and we know we need the put in the 10.000 hours to get there ( Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell ) But the art is not in mastering the tool, it’s just the medium. Don’t get me wrong, we need to master a tool to create the path of the least resistance between our inner voice and the outer world. But in the end it’s not about the ‘end-note’, mastering the skill, it’s about the music (letting the joy shine through from moment to moment).
When people come to me and they ask, “How to meditate?” I tell them, “There is no need to ask how to meditate, just ask how to remain unoccupied. Meditation happens spontaneously. Just ask how to remain unoccupied, that’s all. That’s the whole trick of meditation - how to remain unoccupied. Then you cannot do anything. The meditation will flower.
- Osho - from the book What is Meditation?
I find the unoccupied in:
- the silence during a conversation
- a cup of tea
- waiting for/sitting in the train
- lying down
And indeed, these are the moments when things start to emerge. But I find it challenging to remain unoccupied for longer periods, instead of starting to talk out of discomfort or grabbing the iPad out of boredom.
I keep trying, without trying.
